If you want to know what it’s like to play with some of the biggest musical acts in the world, Adam Wakeman is the man to ask.

Our students got the chance to do just that when Adam came to BIMM Brighton in December for a Masterclass, on the eve of playing keyboards for the huge forthcoming Black Sabbath World Tour.

As well as keyboard duties for Sabbath and for Ozzy Osbourne’s solo tours, Adam has also performed with Annie Lennox, Slash from Guns N Roses, Will Young, Travis, Yes, Robbie Williams and more besides. The BIMM Brighton class were excited to hear about the working life of a skilled session musician and Adam very kindly obliged, sharing many tales from on the road and in the studio and explaining the ins and outs of the session music scene.

Our students had a host of smart questions to put to Adam about his work, and Adam also kindly performed some live material in front of the class. BA1 Guitar student Benji said:

I know Adam’s music but I had no idea he was also classically trained until he performed live!”

Masterclass Host Damien Morris, our Head of Guitar, and himself a successful session player, said:

It was a pleasure to host a Masterclass with someone with such a wealth of knowledge, who was also willing to share this completely with the students.”

We were thrilled to hear that Adam enjoyed his time with us in Brighton:

It’s great to visit BIMM and to see the passion for music, just as enthused in the students as it is in the teaching staff. It is a privilege to be able to give some advice and answer questions to students who genuinely want to pursue a career in music.

Adam’s advice was really valuable and his enthusiasm for his work certainly contagious, and that’s exactly what a good Masterclass is all about.
