It’s that time again for Track of the Week! This is ‘Tell Me’ from BIMM Manchester’s ALEKS, enjoy…
What was the inspiration behind your track?
I guess for this track in particular I was inspired by my personal life experiences and it just felt right to put my feelings out onto the paper.
What did your songwriting process involve?
The songwriting process for “Tell Me” was fairly generic. I sat down with a guitar my hands and a notebook with a pen in front of me and I just started playing around. I felt emotional at the time of writing it, so for me it was most important that I was able to convey my inner thoughts in a chord progression. The only thing is, the first idea that came to me when I sat down to write the song was a little guitar motif, and I ended up not featuring it in the song for some reason. However, whenever I play “Tell Me” live, I keep it as simple as the way I wrote it.
What things do you do differently to other bands?
I always strive to bring something different to the table when it comes to my songwriting. One thing I do when I record is that I sometimes just use my surroundings to create new sounds or at least sounds that would not be programmed into a software. When it comes to performing, I always engage with my audience as although the songs are mine, they are theirs to listen to as well!
Can you describe your sound in three words?
Commercial, percussive, soulful.
What’s the best thing about studying at BIMM?
The best thing about studying in BIMM, in my opinion, is the fact everyone there wants to help others with whatever they can. The balance between friendliness and hard work is great!
What’s the best bit of music advice you’ve been given?
To watch the masters at work, to learn and apply their good habits on yourself and to strive and believe in yourself and to not give up!
What’s next for you?
Next for me would be a lot of rehearsals in preparation for the auditions of the upcoming gigs.
