The sky’s the limit at BIMM Brighton, with incredible opportunities cropping up each week thanks to our close ties and partnerships with the music industry.

Such was the case for six of our most talented students and graduates, who were recently hand-picked by acclaimed blues singer-songwriter Dani Wilde to feature on her new live LP.

Due for release later this month, Live at Brighton Road features contributions from a host of BIMM musicians, including Will Wilde, Victoria Smith, Megan Devereux, Faye Streek, Jack Bazzani, and BIMM Brighton’s current Head of Vocals Kate Cameron.

The album – the third from the international award-winning blues artist and our current Deputy Head of Vocals – was also engineered mixed by BIMM alumnus and Brighton Road Studios owner, Ali Gavan.

Speaking to BIMM Brighton about this incredible opportunity, current student Megan Devereux – who provides backing vocals on the record – talked about gaining a wealth of invaluable experience throughout the sessions:

“Working with Dani and the recording of her album ‘Live at Brighton Road’ was such a great experience. I didn’t have a lot of experience with recording before coming to BIMM so being given the opportunity to work with one my tutors, who is such an established artist, was really exciting and taught me a lot.”

Echoing Megan’s comments was BIMM drums alumni Jack Bazzani, who has spent the last two years touring across Europe with Dani:

“I enjoyed the session at Brighton Road Studios for Dani’s new live album. It was a rare opportunity to collaborate with a great band of such talented musicians.”

Dani, who studied at BIMM Brighton between 2003 before embarking on a highly successful solo career, has since earned a host of accolades over the years and topped various international blues charts. But despite her connections to the college, she explains that her choice to work with a wealth of BIMM musicians on such a prestigious project was merely coincidental and rather a matter of talent:

“I didn’t choose any of these musicians because they were from BIMM; but of course, the quality of students, tutors and alumni we have here at BIMM made for a great band. I didn’t realise until we were all in the studio that pretty much everyone on the project was linked to BIMM!”

The chance to feature on Dani’s album – her first on renowned American blues label VizzTone Label Group – is truly a tremendous honour that will no doubt aid our students in their careers.

So, what advice does the famed player have for other BIMM students wanting to follow in her footsteps? It’s all about putting yourself in the right place at the right time, says Dani:

“I would busk, gig and take support slots. If there was already a support act on a show I wanted to be on, I would ask to support the support and just play a few acoustic songs. I made sure I had my stuff together in regards to having great songs recorded, good promo pics, biography and website/social media. It’s about being the whole package and finding your USP.”

Live At Brighton is due for release on June 16th worldwide on VizzTone Label Group. Check out our BIMM students in action on ‘Glorious Day’, the first single from the album which is available to download now.
