As part of their final degree evaluation, students from BIMM London organised a themed charity event that took place at The Courtyard Theatre, Old Street.
The students were the first class to undertake the Music Business Degree offered at BIMM London, and the full class of twelve people were involved in planning and hosting the elaborate three-roomed event at the East London theatre venue.
The project formed the final piece of the Event Management module. The students’ remit was to organise and execute their own creative event. Tutors evaluated the event while the students submitted a planning portfolio and evaluation afterwards.
Two charities were selected to benefit from money collected on the night, CTBF (the Cinema Television Benevolent Fund) and Help Musicians UK. CTBF is the leading UK charity supporting cinema and TV professionals, while Help Musicians UK supports musicians in their careers up to retirement, at times of both crisis and career breakthrough.
The event was titled ‘The Pulp Fiction Experience’, and was of course themed around the Quentin Tarantino movie, Pulp Fiction. A live band was put together using BIMM musicians who played songs from the film’s soundtrack after the movie itself was screened in the theatre space.
One of the students involved, Jaz Wimbledon, said:
“We sourced venue decorations, promoted and marketed the event online and offline, built up a relationship with the charities and planned the night. We used the skills we had learnt throughout the course and drew on experience we’ve gained both in putting events on at BIMM, and from the various events companies we run outside of university, companies such as Petulant Penguin, TNL Management and Signs & Sounds.”
The event was a great success with movie tickets selling out in twenty minutes. Three hundred people in total attended the party and £577 was raised for the nominated charities. The chance to turn lesson theory into real-life events such as this is a crucial part of the BIMM experience and this marks a terrific first year for our London Music Business Degree.
