BIMM Bristol alumni, George Ezra, has had an amazing week – his single ‘Budapest’ debuted at #4 in the UK Singles Chart, he played an incredible set on the John Peel stage at Glastonbury, and his debut album ‘Wanted On Voyage’ has been released to critical acclaim and looks set to storm the top ten.
Although he appears to have burst suddenly onto the music scene, George has been working towards this moment for many years. In October 2011, the singer-songwriter with the booming, bluesy voice joined BIMM Bristol to study Songwriting.
Jon Harper, BIMM Bristol’s Music Industry Outreach Manager says George was something special from the start: “He stood out instantly as someone we could help to develop here at BIMM. In November 2011, he auditioned in front of a panel of A&R experts for our Live & Lyrical gig at The Thekla, and they were so impressed that they chose him to headline the event.”
BIMM Bristol was also instrumental in helping him to get a record deal: “We filmed his set at The Thekla and sent it off to a load of different labels to start building up some interest. We also introduced him to his Manager, and recommended a top music lawyer who we felt could help him secure a major label deal,” says Jon.
Less than a year after joining BIMM Bristol, he was signed to Columbia Records.
Since then, George’s star has continued to rise. He was championed by Sam Bonham and Richard Pitt from BBC Introducing in the West, which led to him playing the BBC Introducing stage at Glastonbury 2013, just as his debut EP ‘Did You Hear The Rain?’ was released. ‘Wanted On Voyage’ was recorded between early November 2013 and mid January 2014 with producer and regular BIMM Bristol special guest, Cam Blackwood.
Earlier this year, George placed fifth in the BBC Sound of 2014 poll and toured the UK for two months, before heading to Europe where his song ‘Budapest’ had gone top ten in nine countries and reached #1 in Austria. 2014 sure is shaping up to be his year, and here at BIMM, we couldn’t be more proud.
