Greg Cordez: Recording Artist and BIMM Tutor

BIMM Bristol Bass Tutor, Greg Cordez enjoys the balance between the role of BIMM tutor and performing and recording as a professional musician.

As Greg explains:

“The twin roles of tutor and musician are extremely complimentary. They each require the other to make the whole thing work. I love teaching at BIMM and want to do the best I’m capable of doing – always looking to improve further.  I’m also Head of the Theory Department and lucky to have an outstanding team who make it a dream position. It is my hope that we can make the theory department an extremely strong, progressive and creative part of a BIMM degree and the signs are that we are moving in the right direction.”

Greg performs and gigs whenever he can – not just in and around Bristol but across the UK, when he can fit it in with his BIMM work. This year, he has been asked to play the renowned Manchester Jazz Festival in July.

Greg is also a recording artist and received many great reviews for his current album, Paper Planes. The album came out late 2015 and was his first project as a bandleader/composer. It was released on New York-based record label, 99&9 Records.  The album launch took place at the London Jazz Festival 2015, at the prestigious Pizza Express in Soho.

As Greg says:

“I put in place a rule of no more than three takes, and no edits to encourage a collective, and more spontaneous band sound. When I go to NYC and study and play, I come back inspired and full of ideas.”

Greg often can pass on some of his gigs onto deserving BIMM students.

“I learnt a lot from the experience of gigging most nights and in many different genres, so take immeasurable pride when I feel that I can confidently pass on a BIMM bassist’s number. I tell students that if things are going well for you as a musician, you will be tired, stressed and working extremely long hours. But, it is much, much better than the alternative!”

After term finishes at BIMM, Greg will be spending his summer months writing music, playing gigs and starting work on his follow-up album at Peter Gabriel’s renowned Real World Studios.
