A group of BIMM Dublin’s guitar students got the chance to meet a genuine guitar hero when Music Business Tutor Ann Marie Shields arranged for them to meet J. Mascis before his gig at Whelan’s in January.
Massachusetts-based J. Mascis is one of the most innovative and iconic guitarists of the last 30 years: firstly as singer, songwriter and guitarist in the highly influential 90s band Dinosaur Jr., and then with a series of solo and side projects.
His new solo releases on Sub Pop have been a selection of brilliant tunes showcasing all the beautiful melodic touches he is renowned for, and a new generation of music lovers have latched onto his songs.
BIMM’s Ann Marie, who used to act as tour manager for Dinosaur Jr., brought guitar students to meet J at the soundcheck before his Dublin gig — and as a surprise bonus, they met fellow guitar legend Kevin Shields of My Bloody Valentine too!
They chatted to the eager students, answering their questions and demonstrating to them the kind of professionalism and performance that experience and hard work brings. The students were even added to the guestlist of that night’s show!
Student Ryan Centella said: “It was really inspiring to see J soundcheck, perform and how much he still enjoys playing while making a living out of what he loves. It really impressed me. I really loved the relaxed way he relates to the crowd, pausing to drink tea between songs!”
J enjoyed meeting the students so much that before he left town he visited BIMM Dublin for an informal visit and took a tour of the college, chatting with some star-struck students and tutors. He also dropped into the live performance workshop.
Before he left, he posed for some pictures and added his name to the college’s wall of visitors’ signatures — a brilliant end to the kind of day we love having at BIMM Dublin.
