BIMM Dublin alumna Clare Martyn (aka Ria Rua) has been nominated in the ‘Technology 18+’ category for ‘Hit Like A Girl 2019’ – a contest that highlights, supports and encourages female drummers and beat makers.
Hit Like A Girl 2019 is the eighth annual drumming contest for female drummers, open to applicants the world over.
The contest is designed to champion female drummers – something we’re also passionate about doing here at BIMM. Hit Like A Girl encourages girls and women to pick up their drumsticks and start drumming – whatever their age, whatever their playing level and wherever they may be.
Referred to as her artist name Ria Rua, Clare has been nominated alongside female beat makers from all over the world, such as Brazil, the United States, Australia and Canada.
Since graduating from BIMM, Clare has been working as a professional drummer and percussionist. And for the last five months, she has been writing, producing and singing her own music. You can listen to her track ‘Inside My Head’ below – one of four songs from her debut EP, which will be released later this year.
The Champions and Winners of this year’s contest will be awarded more than $60,000 worth of drums, percussion, tech, cymbals, heads, sticks, accessories, scholarships and performance opportunities. And 90 drummers, percussionists and beat makers will receive nearly 400 individual prizes.

How was Hit Like A Girl born?
Drum industry veteran and HLAG Executive Director David Levine felt that female drummers were underrepresented and underserved in the industry. So, he bashed heads together with Mindy Abovitz of Tom Tom Magazine, and Phil Hood and Andy Doerschuk at DRUM! Magazine and created Hit Like A Girl.
Since its creation in 2011, Hit Like A Girl has attracted 5000+ contestants from more than 50 countries – and has successfully raised the profile and highlighted the efforts of female drummers.
Hit Like A Girl is supported by a variety of drum companies and industry publications, such as Gretsch, LP, Ludwig and Yamaha.
When will the winners be announced?
Public voting will end on April 25th.
The Finalists will be announced on May 2 and judged by a panel of the world’s top female and male drummers. The 2019 Hit Like A Girl Champions, winners and runners-up will be announced via a live webcast on May 24, 2019.
Good luck Clare!
