If you’re considering studying a Diploma at BIMM Manchester, then you’ll probably want to hear all about our amazing Diploma students who’ve been having well-deserved industry success recently.
Whether they’re performers studying the Artist Development Diploma in Modern Music (Guitar, Bass, Drums, Vocals or Songwriting), or producers can study the Diploma in Live Sound and Tour Management., they’re making all the right noises… and the industry is most certainly listening! Here’s what they’ve been up to:
Seventeen year old singer-songwriter Charlotte Cannon made her debut live performance at Manchester’s Ruby Lounge at the end of last year, causing a stir with her bold and elegant style. Her talent on the keys and captivating storytelling is quickly becoming recognised with her original song ‘Travel Drivel’ picking up BBC radio airplay, and featuring on the latest BIMM Album. This year, she’s been asked to perform at a number of shows, including opening this year’s Not a Summer Festival, playing at the Bourbon Street Music Club in Amsterdam, and gigging in front of EMI/Virgin at our most recent BIMM A&R showcase. Charlotte’s also been in the studio recording with producer Bill Ryder-Jones (lead guitarist from The Coral), and supported up-and-coming Halifax band, The Orielles at the first BIMM in-house gig this week.
Speaking of the BIMM in-house gig – did you know it was organised by our Live Sound and Tour Management Diploma student, Georgia Welsby? She’s been getting loads of valuable industry experience lately by working at Liverpool Sound City and helping out with all our End-of-Term gigs here at BIMM Manchester. Georgia wants a career as a Tour Manager, and we know that it won’t be long before the ambitions of this hard working and dedicated student are realised!
Socially aware Diploma student Kieran McMahon has set himself one huge musical challenge – he’s vowed to play ‘24 gigs in 24 hours’ on Friday 10th and Saturday 11th July this year, raising money for specialist palliative care unit Dr Kershaw’s Hospice in Oldham. We’re thrilled that Kieran is using his music for such a fantastic cause, and will be cheering him on through his tough physical and mental journey. If you’re in the Manchester area, please support Kieran’s fundraising efforts by purchasing tickets to his celebratory grand finale gig at the Delph Club in Oldham direct from the venue for just £5 each or by donating to his Just Giving page.
Seventeen year old Songwriting Diploma student Josh Taylor is also making waves with his multidimensional talent – not only is he a singer-songwriter and solo artist, but he’s also an actor too! Josh has already released one album and is currently working on his second; and has acted in BBC One show ‘Doctors’, a four-part BBC One drama with Anne-Marie Duff called ‘From Darkness’, and will be appearing in the musical theatre production ‘Not The End Of The World’ at this year’s Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Here at BIMM, we’re not the only ones to notice Josh’s incredible talent – he has almost 102,000 followers on Twitter so he’s pretty good at building his fanbase too!
But these four gifted students aren’t the only ones with recent successes to talk about! Charlotte Cannon’s twin, Sam Cartwright, is in the band Bad Molly currently gaining radio airplay on BBC Introducing; students Teddy White and Jake Clarke performed at our recent End-of-Term gig and for our Universal/RCA A&R showcase; and Joel Rothwell’s band Rothwell has been creating a buzz around town, performing recently at Cannes Film Festival.
Studying a BIMM Manchester Diploma is a fantastic stepping stone to further study too, as some of our students know only too well. Diploma in Live Sound and Tour Management graduate, Jordan Cope, has gone on to study BA (Hons) in Music Business with us and has recently been to Glastonbury to help stage manage the BIMM stage in the Croissant Neuf fields, as well as running areas at Glass Butter Beach and Liverpool Sound City. Songwriting Diploma graduate, Adam Cruttenden, is now studying our BA (Hons) in Songwriting course, and he’s since played at Etihad Stadium, Liverpool Sound City, The Great Escape, Glass Butter Beach, Indie Week festival, 2000Trees and BIMM Berlin, either as a solo artist or with his band Akcadamy. Impressive stuff!
