More credit for Music Journalism tutor Joel McIver

The latest addition to BIMM Birmingham’s Music Journalism faculty, Joel McIver, recently received recognition for his work from not one, but two third parties, including the highly esteemed Guardian newspaper and long-time rock music enthusiasts, Hobgoblin.

As the editor to Bass Guitar Magazine, Joel is someone whose rock & roll credentials are impressive to say the least. He’s helped Bob Geldof write a letter to the Pope, has hung out with Ozzy Osbourne, talked credibility with John Lydon, eaten breakfast with Sting and has had legendary drummers Dave Grohl and Lars Ulrich write forewords for some of his 30 published books.

Most recently, Joel received recognition from the Guardian newspaper for his Dead Rockstars podcast, which he regularly produces with fellow rock music journalist Mick Wall. Throughout the series so far, the duo have mused upon legendary Motorhead frontman Lemmy, Queen’s Freddie Mercury, Ronnie James Dio and John Bonham of Led Zepplin fame. You can check out the entire series right here.

As if a shout out from the Guardian wasn’t enough of an endorsement, Hobgoblin – a drinks brand which has long been synonymous with music genres such as classic rock and heavy metal – recently featured Joel in their Unsung Heroes video series. You can watch the full video on their official Facebook page.

We recently conducted a Q&A with Joel on the BIMM Blog, in which he candidly details some of his more noteworthy experiences as a music journalist. Check out what he had to say, here.
