Time for another Track Of The Week. This time around, we’re loving the powerful new single from BIMM Berlin Songwriting student Rumia. Let’s discover the inspiration behind ‘Lying In Bed’.
What was your inspiration when you began writing the track?
I was thinking about those moments when you can’t fall asleep, so your thoughts start rambling. Mostly about your life, what you did wrong…
Are there any artists that inspire you when writing?
Yes, of course! I love Björk, Rosalía, Thom Yorke… although these first songs that I’m releasing are quite different in style.
What is key to your sound and how do you make your music stand out?
I’ve always wanted to mix rock elements with electronic, trying to do it in a different way. And I’m not quite there yet. I plan to go more extreme in the future.
How does your songwriting process work?
I definitely like to start with the instrumental part. Once I have a nice progression of chords and a sound that I like, that’s when I start with the lyrics. That is what works the best for me.
Describe your sound in 3 words…
Energetic, emotional and ambient.
How has studying at BIMM helped you develop as an artist?
In so many ways! Being around people who are making music all the time – and can give me their opinion, help and support – has been key in developing my own style and a different way of creating music.
What’s next for you?
I’m already working on new music that I will be releasing at the beginning of next year! I can’t wait for you to hear the direction that it’s all taking!
