Ryan Bingham Award-Winning Soundtrack

A childhood in rural Texas couldn’t help but inform Ryan Bingham’s songwriting.

His brand of folk Americana is influenced as much by Bob Dylan as by the roots rock of his Southern homeland. After a couple of early self-released solo albums, Ryan began putting out major label material from Nashville and has been writing and recording ever since.

In October, Ryan took a special trip to BIMM Dublin to deliver a fascinating Masterclass to our students. They were keen to hear the story behind Ryan’s major success working on the award-winning soundtrack for the 2009 film Crazy Heart.

Ryan shared the background story with the class of how one of the movie’s producers approached him and asked if he would like to contribute a song to the soundtrack. Ryan wrote the song ‘The Weary Kind’ and called the producer to tell him he had a demo that was ready to be listened to.

In an unexpected turn of events, the producer happened to be at the house of the songwriter and producer T Bone Burnett. Ryan was invited to bring his demo over. When he arrived, not only was the legendary T Bone there but also some of the cast of Crazy Heart, including Jeff Bridges and Robert Duvall, and the film’s director, Scott Cooper.

Somewhat taken aback, Ryan played his demo for the group. Not surprisingly they were impressed and asked Ryan if he would mind performing the song for them then and there. ‘The Weary Kind’ became the theme song of Crazy Heart and Ryan went on to win a Golden Globe, an Academy Award and a Grammy for it, as well contributing other original material to the film.

Our Masterlcass group was bowled over by Ryan’s tale and we’d like to thank him for coming and sharing his incredible stories and his inspiring career path with us. We can’t think of a better way to motivate our students who are interested in crafting soundtracks and pursuing their own songwriting excellence.
