SOUND OF 2016 JACK GARRATT PLAYS FRESHERS' GIG

Jack Garratt was named BBC Sound of 2016, topping a list of 14 talented finalists which included BIMM’s own Izzy Bizu. Like many winners (and runners-up) before him – such as Adele, Ellie Goulding,Years and Years, Jessie J and Sam Smith  – Jack’s starting a bright career in music.

We were lucky enough to enlist the much in-demand Mr Garratt for an exclusive BIMM London Freshers’ gig at the O2 Academy Islington in September, as well as a backstage Q&A with BIMM Bristol students, ahead of his Bristol Trinity Centre tour date in November.

At the O2 show, Jack performed an amazing full one-hour set, which included many of his songs, as well as covers of Daft Punk’s ‘Get Lucky’ and ‘Clint Eastwood’ by Gorillaz. Jack interacted with the students, who all loved his performance.

Jack was supported by some of BIMM’s own talent, as chosen by Mark Bennett from United Talent Agency, namely Fickle Friends, Becky Arundel and Moses.

Moses were thrilled by the opportunity:

“Thanks to BIMM, after five months of playing together we were opening for the amazing Jack Garratt. Sharing the stage with such a big artist gave us that ‘yes we can’ feeling. Let’s do it again!”

Student Bobbie Harvey was at the gig, telling us, “I have never been more blown away than to have heard this guy perform! Front row view of the absolute musical genius, Jack Garratt!”

In Bristol – ahead of Jack Garratt’s gig at the Trinity Centre – Trinity Music Training invited 11 BIMM students to listen to Jack’s soundcheck and to meet him in person for a Q&A. Harry Clayton (BA1 Songwriting) got some really helpful insights from the meeting:

“Jack spoke about different aspects of touring, his songwriting process and his experience of growing from a small performer into a touring artist. It was great for me personally because my style of songwriting has always been a solo approach. The most relevant thing for me was that even Jack writes songs he doesn’t like or won’t use. It was just great to hear that even artists like him have to deal with that! Can’t complain when you get to meet one of your inspirations: the advice he gave was invaluable.”

At BIMM we pride ourselves on being able to introduce students to artists like Jack Garratt, who are heading to the top of their game. It means that our students receive the kind of advice and inspiration that we know really works.
