Craig Fitzgerald is a talented second year Songwriting student at BIMM Dublin. He is also lead vocalist, rhythm guitarist and chief songwriter for the four-piece guitar band from Mullingar known as The Academic.

The Academic are currently enjoying an exhilarating run of high profile support slots and festival dates – so much so that Craig is taking the decision to defer his second year of studies at BIMM in order to keep his band out on the road.

Last year The Academic performed at Benicassim and Electric Picnic and more recently opened for big acts like Dublin indie rock band Kodaline at the Galway International Arts Festival and Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds at The Marquee in Cork, where they also supported Pixies in 2014. They’ve played the main stage at both the Y Not Festival and Indiependence Festival this year, at British Summer Time in Hyde Park, and on the XFM stage at the Great Escape. In August the band will perform at the Boardmasters Festival in Cornwall and then in September it’s over to the Reeperbahn Festival in Germany.

In the midst of this exhilarating live itinerary, their song ‘Different’ has been featured on Spotify’s ‘New Music Monday’ playlist and has now had over 350,000 plays. The song also reached Number 9 on the Irish Radio Airplay Chart, while previous release ‘Bear Claws’ was featured as RTE 2FM’s ‘Song Of The Week’. The band has also been aired on both XFM and BBC Radio 1.

With all this tremendous exposure heading their way it’s no surprise that the band are plugging away at getting their music out there as much as possible and winning new fans wherever they go. It’s a tremendous surge of success for the young group who were signed last year following a ‘minor industry frenzy’.

Alongside Craig in The Academic are Matt Murtagh on Lead Guitar and Backing Vocals, Stephen Murtagh on Bass Guitar and Backing Vocals and Dean Gavin on Drums and Backing Vocals. We wish Craig and the boys the very best of luck as they hit the road to enjoy some of their own headline dates around Ireland and the UK. Be sure to try and catch them.
