It’s the first Monday of March and spring is well and truly on its way. To celebrate, here’s our latest Track of the Week, featuring BIMM Manchester Songwriting student Vanessa Maria.
What inspired you when writing this track?
I was experiencing a lot of anxiety , particularly social media-related…I was literally becoming addicted to using snapchat and Instagram. To the point where the idea of being without my phone kinda scared me a bit. I wanted to Imagine a world without social media and phones.
Were there any particular musical influences while you were writing?
The 1975,Solange, SZA, M83, Lana Del Rey, The weekend.
Is there anything you do to try and make your music stand out?
I like to juxtapose dreamlike imagery with blunt everyday life.
How does your songwriting process work?
I start off with a vocal melody and then move on to the lyrics. From there, I build up a melody on acoustic guitar and then get onto Logic (DAW) and incorporate synth lines. When I write collaboratively, the process can be different, but I always start off with a vocal melody.
Describe your sound in 3 words…
Colourful, Trippy, Dream-Pop.
How has studying at BIMM helped you develop as an artist?
I’ve learned how to network effectively and have developed a better understanding of the music business and how the industry works.
What’s your favourite thing about studying at BIMM?
My fave thing would be the opportunities to go to masterclasses and network with industry professionals, last week, UK producer Nat Powers came in. He’s produced an album for Dr.Dre , produced for Ghostface Killah and works with UK grime artists Giggs and D Double E. I networked with him and we exchanged contact details.
Anything exciting coming up you can share?
I have a collaboration with House/Techno Label Krafted . It’s a collab’ between Manchester based David Ricardo, UK based Paul Sawyer , GIAPAN and L.A based collective Redux Saints. You can expect to hear our track ‘Free Minds’ on major platforms from Tuesday 25th March.
I’m also recording future releases at the minute with the band. We’ve got more tunes coming your way very soon. Also, I’ve got some exciting festival performances coming up, such as When In Manchester Festival on Saturday April 20th, with more to be announced. Keep an eye on my socials.
