Waywell - Empty Space ft. Charlotte Newman

Track of the Week

Happy Monday, we hope you all had a fantastic weekend (who was at The Great Escape in Brighton?). As ever, Monday is bringing fresh music for your ears! Here’s BIMM Manchester’s Waywell with “Empty Space” ft. Charlotte Newman…

What was the inspiration behind your track?
The sounds are inspired by Pink Floyd’s “Shine on you Crazy Diamond” mixed with Bonobo for the electronic elements. As I progressed in making the track I decided to incorporate the well respected philosopher Alan Watts in an attempt to share his views on reality and the relationship between the self and the universe. The song resembles an introspective and metaphysical journey of self realisation.

What did your songwriting process involve?
The song wrote itself really, I started with the synth then it progressed from there. I played some guitar over it, made some beats, and eventually Charlotte Newman laid down some chilled vocals over the top, the whole process took a number of months of going back and forth, editing little parts at a time with fresh ears. Most of my songs are made by mistakes that end up sounding good.

What do you try and do differently, to make your sound stand out?
I try and be as open as possible with my creativity and to not limit myself to certain structures, tempo’s and particular drum beats. I try and make my music have a certain psychedelic and chilled feel that will be good to listen to in a relaxed environment and also live.

Describe your sound in 3 words…
