Welcome to November, how did that happen? This week our Track of the Week comes from BIMM Dublin‘s Young Earth, and don’t miss their new EP which comes out this week too!
What was the inspiration behind your track?
Honestly, in a lame kind of Sultans of Swing way, it’s about the pressures of being a musician and being in a band and trying to make it work. It’s about the self-doubt and that feeling of always wanting more from what you’re doing, always trying to push up through the mud to a higher level. – Mark
What did your songwriting process involve?
This one was actually kind of a weird one, as I wrote it the day of my final college results. I was in work, my phone was dead and I started humming the verse melody – I had to loop it for an hour until I could run home and record it! By that point I had the whole melody mapped out so all I had to do was put some chords underneath. We ran through it in rehearsals that week and it was pretty much fully formed. – Mark
What things do you do differently to other bands?
It’s hard to tell what we do differently in terms of how we function, we work hard like every other band but when it comes to playing shows we try not to take ourselves too seriously, it’s about having a good time and sharing that energy with the crowd as much as working hard. – Ben
Can you describe your sound in three words?
Upbeat, Craic, Cans.
Have you channeled any artist in particular on this track?
I don’t think we’ve channeled any particular artists, as the way the song came about was completely organic and tied to a melody instead of a sound – we knew we wanted this to be a huge sounding song though, which was always the aim when it came to recording. When we were placing it in the EP, we knew it had to be the final song. I suppose it’s probably the most serious song that we play, in an Irish rock kind of way.
What’s the best thing about studying at BIMM?
Meeting other musicians and like minded people, it makes you work harder than just going it alone. – Ben
What’s the best bit of music advice you’ve been given?
To play everywhere, play at every opportunity. – Ben
What’s next for Young Earth?
The focus at the moment is on the launch of our Frequency Illusion EP at the Academy 2 on November 10th but after that who knows? World domination is always on the cards! – Ben
