Overview

The MA Learning & Teaching in Creative Industries is perfect if you’re looking to enter into a teaching career for the first time. It’s also the ideal choice if you’re an experienced educator wanting to broaden your knowledge and skills within the field of creative arts education at Further Education and Higher Education levels.

You’ll engage in critical and collaborative development as a creative educator and improve your skills and agency as a teacher, as well as literacy in educational research.

The MA programme will take a person-centred approach and include a balance of expert tuition, experiential workshops and self-guided study. You will learn to analyse your key interests, beliefs and values to expand knowledge in areas such as:

  • Learning and teaching practices
  • Instructional and curricular design
  • Assessment and feedback practices
  • Learning theory and psychology
  • Creative and experiential approaches to learning
  • Critical pedagogy
  • Critical theory and education in society

This MA is offered in two distinct pathways:

The ‘Early Career’ pathway: designed for early and pre-career teachers

The ‘Early Career’ pathway focuses on developing your own practical and reflective skills within the classroom. It includes the introductory module, ‘Teaching, Learning and Assessment’, for which no prior teaching experience is required.

This pathway is offered both full-time over one calendar year (three semesters) and part-time over two calendar years.

The ‘Experienced Educator’ pathway: designed for qualified teachers or those with over three years’ teaching experience

You’ll expand upon what you already know and complete the programme with deeper theoretical and pedagogic knowledge. You’ll also explore new practices in innovation, curriculum-making and leadership.

Because our flexible MA courses provide an educational experience that works around you, this pathway is offered part-time over two calendar years so that you can continue with your day-to-day profession.


You will be required to complete four modules for both of the MA pathways. And your MA programme will culminate in one of two ways:

  • A research dissertation that discusses and explores a chosen area of academic interest or professional practice.
  • An Action-Research Project where you will identify and improve upon a specific area of your own professional practice. You’ll also undertake a practicum of teaching and placement opportunities. Please note that you’ll be offered a placement opportunity if you are not currently working within education.

  • Teaching, Learning and Assessment (Early Career pathway)

    You will engage in a broad range of learning and teaching techniques suitable for roles in post-compulsory education. The module develops competencies in planning, teaching, assessing, giving feedback and supporting different forms of learning. As an introduction to the course, no prior teaching experience is assumed.

  • Leading Learning (Experienced Educator pathway)

    This module focuses on the concept and practice of leadership within contemporary education, adopting an individualised approach to helping you engage in both ‘learning to lead’ and ‘leading to learn’. You are given the opportunity to develop and reflect on different styles and approaches relating to individual and wider professional contexts. You will choose and explore a personally significant leadership challenge.

  • Creative Educational Practice

    This module focuses on creativity of method and aim within education. You will engage in experiential workshops in order to practice techniques that expand your practical skillsets as a creative educator. You are encouraged to look at creative techniques within your own teaching and to discuss how assessment decisions are made and justified in creative subjects. You will also share how creative and effective learning manifests within your professional contexts.

  • Investigating Learning and Teaching

    This module will grapple with a variety of real-world theories and practices of research used to investigate education and the creative subjects. You will investigate and use different methodologies of qualitative and practitioner research in order to better understand learning and teaching within the creative industries. For the module’s assessment, you will generate a research proposal, which can be used for your final research dissertation/project.

  • Education, Ideology and Society

    You will engage in a range of critical positions on education and the curriculum, exploring what, how and why we teach. You will explore the variety of aims and ideologies at play within education and learn to critically engage with ideas from the social sciences, psychology and education in analysis and debate. You will also learn how to use these languages to engage in your own educational practices more deeply.

  • Curriculum and Instructional Design

    This module supports you in developing short-courses and curricula. You will look at a variety of methods and orientations to curriculum design, including examining digital and blended learning approaches applicable to courses on and offline, as well as managing individual and collaborative learning.

  • Coaching and Mentoring

    This module facilitates your development as an effective coach and/or mentor. You will explore a variety of person-centred techniques and approaches for partnering with learners to support their development and empower them as individuals. You will participate in critical and reflective learning-in-action while receiving professional supervision throughout the module.

  • Research Dissertation

    This module provides you with the opportunity to engage in sustained scholarly work of an innovative and independent nature. This work will focus on an area of professional interest with regards to learning and teaching in creative education. In this module, you will be able to demonstrate the knowledge and expertise of an area in higher education, drawing on the theories, knowledge of methodologies and skills developed throughout the course under individual supervision.

  • Action-Research Project (Early Career Pathway)

    This module allows you to investigate and improve a specific area of your own professional practice, using the method of action research. It provides an alternate route to the research dissertation following a similar structure and outcomes. As part of this project route, you will undertake a credit-bearing practicum of teaching and placement opportunities, which is recognised in forming the ITE requirements for professional formation (QTLS) through the Education & Training Foundation.

Minimum requirements

A good degree (normally 2.2 or above) in a creative industry related subject or significant professional experience in the creative arts/industries.

Overseas students where English is not their native language may be required to meet a minimum English language requirement of an Academic IELTS 6.5. We require a minimum of 6.0 to be achieved in each band.

After this course:

Progression

Graduates will be qualified to work as teaching practitioners, administrators and leaders in creative arts institutions at Further Education and Higher Education levels. They will also be able to use the course to further self-employed careers such as one-to-one teaching, creative workshops, curriculum consultation or developmental coaching.
