Exciting developments for BA(Hons) Commercial Modern Music students
We are delighted to announce that the BA (Hons) Commercial Modern Music (CMM) course has been enhanced to fully support students who want to become post-primary music teachers. As a CMM graduate, you will now meet all the criteria required by the Teaching Council of Ireland for entry to the Professional Master of Education (PME) in music. By allowing you to progress to the PME, the course opens up outstanding opportunities in music education.
Tailored to the PME
The CMM curriculum now offers you the opportunity to gain academic credits across all the subject areas recognised by the Teaching Council of Ireland, including:
- Instrumental and/or vocal performance
- Harmony and counterpoint
- Composition, Aural, keyboard and music technology skills
- Western art music (new elective)
- Irish traditional music (new elective)
Two exciting new modules
As part of these changes, we’re introducing two brand-new 5-credit elective modules in Year 4:
Western Art Music
This module deepens your understanding of one of the world’s most influential musical traditions. Through historical, cultural, and analytical study, you will explore the forces that shaped Western art music while honing your skills in transcription, analysis, and interpretation.
Traditional Irish Music Studies
Celebrating Ireland’s rich musical heritage, this module examines the evolution of traditional Irish music: its instruments, vocal styles, and cultural significance. You will explore how the tradition has been preserved and revived, its links to dance, and the impact of key figures and movements.
These developments ensure that you are equipped not only with a broad and rigorous academic foundation in music but also with the credentials required to pursue a career in teaching. If you choose, you will graduate ready to progress to the PME and inspire the next generation of musicians in Ireland’s classrooms.
