Kojaque on Creativity and Staying True to Your Art at BIMM Masterclass
BIMM Dublin students were treated to a masterclass with Kojaque – the Dublin-born rapper, filmmaker, and visual artist whose music blends sharp social commentary with cinematic storytelling.
Kojaque shared his thoughts on creativity, the importance of authenticity, and navigating today’s music landscape.
“I’ve always used characters in my music as a way of telling stories. It’s a way of stepping outside of yourself a bit. You can explore things that might be harder to say if it just feels like it’s you. But at the same time, there’s always a bit of you in everything you write.”
When talking about how short-form content has changed music culture, Kojaque shared his thoughts on balancing artistry with online platforms.
“There’s a lot of unusual, left-field stuff that’s getting more attention because of short-form content. It’s all about how you use it – but don’t let it get in the way of the artistry.”
He also encouraged students to trust their creative instincts and not let algorithms dictate their output.
“Please don’t be like, ‘Hey TikTok, what do you think of this song?’ and then stop working on it if no one responds. That completely devalues your relationship to the music. Let people in when it’s finished.”
A passionate filmmaker as well as a musician, Kojaque spoke about the importance of visuals in his work.
“I’ve always loved making music videos. They’re for me, you know? Even if they’re expensive or not everyone’s watching them, I love that they create a world around the music. That’s what makes me a fan of other artists, too.”
Kojaque’s message throughout the session was clear: stay true to your art, and don’t let external pressure shape your process.
