Vocalist and guitarist Matt Deighton has been part of numerous successful musical projects over the years, notably as a singer and guitarist with acid jazz outfit, Mother Earth.
In 2000, he temporarily replaced Noel Gallagher on guitar on the 2000 Oasis tour. Since then he’s played with Paul Weller and currently plays in super-group The Family Silver, with ex- Style Council and Weller drummer Steve White, and ex-Ocean Colour Scene bassist Damon Minchella.
Earlier this month Matt joined us at BIMM Manchester to deliver some excellent 1-to-1 Masterclass sessions, taking in everything from songwriting and band dynamics to musicianship and life! Check out some of the fantastic quotes from the students who met Matt:
Tom Castrey, BA1 Drums and Zach Logan, BA1 Songwriting:
“We played Matt a couple of our songs. At the moment, we are without a bass player and we find this to be quite difficult. Matt encouraged us to open up our minds and use this as a unique positive. He told us about Sly and The Family Stone – how the band were without a drummer and how, because of this, Larry Graham created slap bass. It was great to get advice from someone with so much experience – it really opened up our eyes to the possibilities of our own creative freedom.”
Olly Flavell, BA1 Songwriting:
“Matt and I had a great discussion about life! I played Matt a couple of songs, one I considered to be my strongest and one I considered to be the weakest. We spoke about some of the issues I face with writing songs and Matt offered me some great advice about changing the lyrics in my songs to move them in a different direction. I now feel inspired to do that.”
Joseph Glencross, BA2 Songwriting:
“I spoke to Matt about the difficulty I have with finishing songs. He offered some great advice and techniques that I think will help to evolve my songwriting process and allow me to finish writing songs. The Masterclass was super useful, a 10/10!”
Martha Phillips, Diploma Songwriting:
“I got some great personal feedback about my songs. It was a really useful session as it geared me towards thinking about the future. Matt even recommended some publishing companies for me to look into.”
Patrick Poole, BA2 Songwriting:
“It was great to be able to speak to someone with so much experience. We spoke about band dynamics and the difficulty I seem to have to hold a band together. Matt told me about a similar experience he has had, and the importance of finding the right musicians to work with. His advice definitely made me feel I was on the right path.”
This kind of excellent feedback shows just why this type of individual expertise is something we aim to prioritise as part of our student experience at BIMM – why not be a part of it?
