Tutor News

Nathan Sudders is a Bass Tutor at BIMM Manchester and long-time member of Manchester band, and live circuit favourites, The Whip. While The Whip are taking a well-deserved short break, Nathan has been busy working on another exciting high-profile project – playing on the first solo album from Elbow frontman, Guy Garvey.

The album, named Courting the Squall, was released at the end of October and has been gathering positive reviews for its unexpected sound and eclectic range of influences. Alongside Nathan on bass, the rest of Garvey’s band consist of I Am Kloot’s Pete Jobson on guitar, Alex Reeves on drums, and Ben Christophers on keyboards. Garvey described the line-up for the band as consisting of his ‘favourite musicians outside Elbow’.

In his role at BIMM Manchester, Nathan teaches Diploma Live Performance Workshop, BA (Hons) Bass Pre-Production and Diploma Session Styles and was one of the very first members of staff to join the BIMM Manchester team. His work on Guy’s album came about via their friendship in the close-knit community of Manchester musicians. As Nathan explains:

I was talking to Guy about having a year off from The Whip as it had been ten years of constant touring for us. He basically said to me, ‘Right, in your year off you can come and play bass on my solo album.’ So last year in mid-September we went to Real World studios for the first session for the album.”

Playing, writing and performing with Garvey and his solo band is proving to be an experience that Nathan is truly enjoying and learning from:

It’s obviously been great to work with someone like Guy. He’s one of Britain’s best songwriters and he’s such a positive person. He’s very good at working with people’s strengths. Personally I’ve learnt a lot from him in the last year, both musically and mentally.

In December Garvey and his crew take to the road for a handful of live dates, including two nights at Manchester’s Albert Hall. In the meantime, you can see Nathan, Guy and the band play an excellent live version of their first single ‘Angela’s Eyes’ on Jools Holland, right here.
