Fontaines D.C. nominated for Grammy Award

26 November, 2020

BIMM Music Institute Dublin graduates Fontaines D.C. have landed a Grammy nomination for Best Rock Album with their second studio album A Hero’s Death.

Made up of Grian Chatten (vocals), Carlos O’Connell (guitar), Conor Curley (guitar), Conor Deegan III (bass), and Tom Coll (drums), the band released their second album earlier this year. It follows on from the band’s 2019 debut album, Dogrel, which was met with critical acclaim upon its release. Ben Beaumont-Thomas from The Guardian gave A Hero’s Death a perfect five stars out of five, stating that Fontaines D.C. “deliver a difficult but powerful second album full of songwriting that stares life in the face.”

This year’s other nominees for Best Rock Album include Daylight by Grace Potter, Sound & Fury by Sturgill Simpson, The New Abnormal by The Strokes and Kiwanuka by Michael Kiwanuka, who also won the Mercury Prize this year.

The Grammy Awards are considered to be one of the biggest award ceremonies in the world. They’re presented by The Recording Academy to recognise achievements in the music industry. This year’s award ceremony is being dedicated to the resilience of the music industry, as well as the frontline workers combating the spread of COVID-19. It’s overseen by the Academy’s interim president, Harvey Mason Jr.

This year’s Grammy Awards will be held on 31 January 2021, after what has been a particularly tough year for the music industry. The nominations were announced by people within the industry across the globe speaking via video chat. Due to restrictions on large gatherings that are in place at the moment, the exact format for January’s awards ceremony remains unclear. One thing’s for sure though we will have everything crossed for Fontaines D.C.

When speaking to RTÉ News Dara Kilkenny, Executive Principal of BIMM Music Institute Dublin said: “We are incredibly proud. They were always involved in creativity and from the moment they stepped inside the door they were encouraged to think outside the box and try and do something original and do something new. This is only the start for them.”
