So, October is coming to an end and to kickstart the week we’ve got a great Track of the Week from BIMM Dublin Alumni Orchid Collective. This is ‘FORCES’…
What was the inspiration behind your track?
The main inspiration is basically that we’ve all had bad days. After a year with a lot of change, the song is a statement of reflection.
What did your songwriting process involve?
‘FORCES’ began during the “Big Snow” back in March. Myself and Shea were locked up at my place with severe cabin fever and spent the few days jamming new ideas. The first verse and chorus were written in those couple of days and after bringing the song to the other guys, we had a full song structure worked out. When the snow melted we emerged from our ice cave with a new baby single.
What do you try and do differently, to make your sound stand out?
We focus a lot on our vocal harmonies as that was always a stamp of our sound from when we started as more of a folky project. There’s also the atmospheric instrumentation, especially from the guitar. We try to blend folk and a post-rock sound into the indie style of music we’re now creating. With ‘FORCES’ we also began listening to a lot of Alt-J and began experimenting with more minimal mixes of production. We experimented with synth sounds and also created more space for every instrument to breathe a bit more than they had in the past.
Describe your sound in 3 words…
We’re not sure.
Are there any particular artists that inspired you whilst writing the track?
Definitely Alt-J, The 1975, a lot of the Dirty Hit bands, Half Moon Run and Coldplay.
What’s the best thing about studying at BIMM?
Mik Pyro (Tutor at BIMM Dublin).
How has BIMM helped you develop as an Artist?
Life in BIMM was great for all of us. I think the best opportunity BIMM has offered us as artists was the chance to network and meet like-minded musicians. We formed our band in BIMM and none of us lived in Dublin before college so it was amazing just to be thrown into a melting pot of musicians.
What’s the best bit of music advice you’ve been given?
One thing we have learned from being in a band over the past two years is always be yourself. Trust your own judgments and always make music that you’re happy making. Don’t let others sway your vision or direction and work as hard as possible to get to where you want to go.
Anything exciting coming up you can share?
After releasing ‘FORCES’ we’re embarking on our biggest tour to date which is definitely something we’re all excited about. We’re just back from playing in Berlin and now we’re off on an UK/Ireland tour. We also have a few more things up our sleeves before the end of the year but unfortunately, our lips are sealed.
