Former BIMM London student, Izzy Bizu is one of the 15 nominees on the BBC Sound of 2016 list announced today.
Izzy joins fellow Brits Critics’ Choice nominee, Frances and overall winner, Jack Garratt on the list. They share the list with Neneh Cherry’s daughter, Mabel, Canadian R&B sensation Alessia Cara, rap collective Section Boyz plus, Blossoms, Loyle Carner, J Hus, Dua Lipa, Billie Marten, Mura Masa, NAO, Rat Boy and WSTRN.
The BBC Sound of 2016 is compiled by a panel of 144 DJs, critics and writers, highlighting 15 rising acts for the coming year. It will be whittled down to a shortlist of 5 in January, with the winner announced on the BBC Radio 1 Breakfast Show on 8 January 2016.
This highly influential list sees many of its artists ~ not just the overall winner ~ going onto huge success. Last year BIMM Brighton alumni, James Bay was runner-up on The BBC Sound of 2015 list and went on the score the year’s biggest-selling debut album, Chaos and the Calm!
Previous winners have included Adele, Sam Smith and Haim. Years and Years, who were the victors in 2015, went on to enter the charts at Number 1 with their debut album, Communion and recently announced their first headline show at Wembley Arena.
Soul diva Izzy Bizu is one of several young solo artists who feature prominently on The BBC Sound of 2016 list. We’re all keeping our fingers crossed for her at BIMM.
DJ Annie Mac said The BBC Sound Of 2016 was “a definitive list of the key artists to look out for and listen to” next year.
