We can’t believe we’re nearly at the end of term 2. Summer is literally around the corner! *We’ll ignore the weather outside* It’s also time for another Track of the Week! This time from BIMM Bristol’s Jasper Storey. Enjoy!
What was the inspiration behind your track?
I wrote the song after going to a club in Bristol called PRYZM. When I was there I realised that everyone looked and dressed exactly the same, it was like a prison or something. So the song is about people being too scared to stand out and be themselves.
What did your songwriting process involve?
It started out with just the bass riff. Then, once I knew what I wanted the song to be about, I built the verse lyrics and melody around that. I then showed it to my mate Rishi and we wrote the chorus together.
What things do you do differently to other bands?
I probably do everything differently to other bands… unless there’s a Jasper Storey tribute band out there – in which case, hit me up!
Can you describe your sound in three words?
Jazzy purring story-telling
Have you channeled any artist in particular on this track?
When I was writing it, I was listening to a lot of Bill Withers, particularly his album Still Bill. That kind of acoustic funk style. Those kind of grooves were in my head for sure when I came up with the bass part. The idea for the staccato piano came from Jay-Z I think. I wanted it to sound like an old-school hip hop loop.
What’s the best thing about studying at BIMM?
Definitely meeting like-minded musicians. I’ve found most of my band through networking at BIMM, and we gig together regularly now.
What’s the best bit of music advice you’ve been given?
Keep on keepin’ on. Don’t be too serious, don’t think about it too much. The minute you stop and look around is the minute you fall off.
What’s next for you?
I’m filming a music video for this song this very week! In PRYZM, of course. I’ll also be releasing it as a single next month. I hope you’ve enjoyed this exclusive listen to it! Stay tuned.
