Rumer And Rob Shirakbari Masterclass

19 February, 2015

Our Masterclasses are one of the most popular, fun and educational events that we run at BIMM’s colleges — and we’re always on the look-out for inspiring guests.

BIMM Dublin scored a double-bill of world-class music industry practitioners when singer-songwriter Rumer and her musical director Rob Shirakbari dropped by to hold a masterclass.

Rumer broke through to wide acclaim a few years ago, and is now one of the most respected singer-songwriters at work today. She has collaborated very closely with Rob as her producer and musical director on her recent album ‘Into Colour’.

Besides his work with Rumer, Rob Shirakbari is known for his work with legendary artists Burt Bacharach and Dionne Warwick, and he has also worked with Elvis Costello and Aretha Franklin.

Rob talked about the power of the collaborative partnership, saying,

“As a collaborator it’s OK to be that person who comes in and tidies things — because you want to help brilliant musicians be better.”

The two guests shared their broad experience with the BIMM students, and sprinkled their conversation with gems of knowledge that the attendees will remember throughout their studies.

Rumer left the students with a piece of advice that will help all of our eager, young music business professionals: “Show up and behave like you’re getting paid — and then one day you will be.”

Shauna Watson, BIMM Dublin’s Events and Guests Assistant called it a, “really inspiring” masterclass, that shone light on, “their songwriting process, the music industry, overcoming gender inequalities in the industry and what life as a working musician is like.

At the end was a moment of excitement, as ten lucky students had their names selected from a hat and won tickets to attend the gig at The Academy!

It was a hugely memorable day, and all the students left fired up and ready to make their own splash in the music world.
