Hunger Moon - Oh Friend

Track of the Week

So, where’s Spring? If any one has seen it, please return it! And on the subject of Spring, don’t forget the clocks go forward on Saturday night (that’s the bad one where you lose an hours sleep!)

But also, it’s Monday, and that means it’s time for Track of the Week! Last week we celebrated ending the second term at BIMM Birmingham, and this brilliant track was performed. Here’s Hunger Moon with ‘Oh Friend…’

What was the inspiration behind your track?
Oh Friend is an ode to companionship, which has been the single constant over the past year despite the changes within our lives, such as quitting our jobs to pursue what we love at university.

What did your songwriting process involve?
The track took a little longer to come together than our other tracks. The guitar part is quite crucial to the track so initially this led us to pursue a more straight up band sound for the chorus section. However, both myself and Natalie agreed this wasn’t the sound we wanted to go for and wanted to keep it as organic as possible. We were sat backstage about to play at Birmingham Town Hall at the start of January and with time to kill, we thought we would have another crack at writing the chorus section with just my acoustic guitar, that’s when it clicked! We knew straight away that ‘Oh Friend’ would be the perfect debut single for Hunger Moon.

What things do you do differently to other bands?
We like to keep it quite compact so play as a duo live. I often believe that a good song is determined by whether or not it sounds good stripped back to just a guitar or piano and vocal.

Can you describe your sound in three words?
Atmospheric, indie-pop.

Have you channeled any artist in particular on this track?
I’d say Amber Run and Daughter helped us find the sound for the track.

What’s the best thing about studying at BIMM?
The opportunities and industry exposure that BIMM offer are second-to-none for upcoming original artists. Their facilities and support have also encouraged and helped us to develop as an act and to hone our craft, giving us the creative space and tools to find our sound!

What’s the best bit of music advice you’ve been given?
Just keep going!

What’s next for you?
We’ve been getting loads of good feedback from the single from lots of new places, so we plan to just enjoy the response we get from ‘Oh Friend’. We will have some more live dates to announce soon as well as our next single, yes you heard it here first!
